You might ask:
“What is a Doula?”
If someone were to ask me what a Doula is, I would tell them the definition; Doula dou·la [ˈdo͞olə]- also known as a birth companion and post-birth supporter; a non-medical person who assists a woman before, during, and/or after childbirth, as well as her spouse and/or family, by providing physical assistance and emotional support.
But there is so much more to a Doula than that.
We are the release of breath you didn’t realize you were holding, the gentle touch you didn’t know you needed, the kind words of encouragement at just the right moment, the help to your partner who wants to know how to make you feel better and the gentle comfort measures to your tired, sore body you didn’t know could be relieved. You see, a Doula is so much more.
We hold your space and make it safe. When we are present, we give the continuous care and emotional support that is needed during labor. We validate your feelings and have the knowledge to tell you why you feel that way. Doulas are there for your partner as well. We assist in guiding them on how to help you so when you look back you remember them being in it with you, not off to the side not knowing how to help you. We help you find your voice in your birth you didn’t know you had.
A Doula helps guide you through the birth process and lays out your options clearly so you and your partner can make the best decision for your family. We support whatever type of birth you want, whether it be all natural or to have an epidural, from home birth to hospital birth, low intervention to high intervention; hands on to hands off. We are there with you every step of the way.
